A near-black navy ground with cream and red medallions, framed by rows of red-and-white diamonds. Printed on mul cotton — the light, open-weave cotton that makes a dupatta drape instead of sit.

• Fabric: Mul cotton — light, soft, breathable
• Print: Ajrakh, in the traditional madder-and-indigo palette

Wear it with: a plain kurta in cream, white or mustard. The near-black ground makes almost anything work, and it's the easiest of the seven to wear to an evening thing.

Care: First wash separately in cold water — dark cotton releases a little colour at first. Mild detergent, no brushing, no wringing. Line-dry in shade. Iron on medium; keep the iron off the tassels.
